Headline “US Bases Afire”.   Looks like a scary time for the Allies – front page details US and Britain “on the defensive” in “largest sea battle in history” in the Pacific; US under attack in Manila; air raid warnings in Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Small article on front page about Emperor Hirohito informing his dead ancestors about the war (not pictured).  In the movie listings I was surprised to see ads for racy/sexy movies in a smaller section.  I always thought that adult movies started in the 1970s, but apparently the 1940s had its own milder version, but no doubt racy for the time.  Ads in picture gallery.
