Lead And We Will Follow City’s Rally Answers FDR – Philadelphia Record 05/29/1941
Headline:”‘Lead And We Will Follow’ City’s Rally Answers FDR”
Philadelphia Record 05/29/1941
This piece clearly shows America at or near the height of patriotic fervor, gearing up for a full war effort. The “rally” alluded to in the headline is a pro war, pro America rally headed by La Guardia. More interesting are the attacks, in articles and editorials, against once hero Charles Lindbergh and the “America First” isolationists. It seems that America had firmly decided to enter the war at full force and was closing ranks against internal dissent – at least in this newspaper, anyway.

- article about the supposed death of Max Schmeling, shot by the British while trying to escape an Allied POW camp after participating in the invasion of Crete. Schmeling was a former gold medal heavyweight boxing champion who knocked out Joe Louis and later was used by Hitler for propaganda purposes. Although the article says he was shot and killed, it turns out that he didn’t die! Per Wikipedia, Schmeling died in 2005.
